At Least 6 Lose Their Lives in Stampede at Ghana Armed Forces Enlistment Drive
At least six individuals have died during a stampede at a military recruitment event held in a stadium in Ghana.
The Wednesday's "devastating" incident seems to have been caused by "an unexpected surge of applicants who overcame security measures and stormed the entrances," stated a release from the nation's military.
22 additional individuals were hurt, including 5 who are in serious state.
Thousands had turned up at the El-Wak sports venue, in the main city, the capital, with the hope of joining the armed forces.
Ghana has a rate of joblessness among young people of about thirty-two percent, the latest official data indicate, and such recruitment events normally draw large crowds and often lead to chaotic scenes.
The closing date to submit applications for this recruitment was prolonged for a week to accommodate more applicants, as a number had experienced challenges in the process.
Army spokesperson Capt Veronica Adzo Arhin said the stampede took place ahead of the planned commencement time of 06:20 GMT.
Ghana's President John Mahama has visited the injured in medical care.
Order has been reestablished, and the enlistment process has now started.
