Bolsonaro detained after being declared a risk of fleeing

The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the protest called by his son.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of his "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a embassy office", a announcement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the US embassy in the capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative US President Donald Trump, prompting him to enact a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a detention review on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that he be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a plot aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, the capital city.
