British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts providing entry to the facility... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he commented. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
