Doris Included in Irish Selection But Joe McCarthy Misses Out

Returning manager the Ireland coach has named skipper Caelan Doris in his Irish team for the autumn internationals, however Joe McCarthy is absent.

Doris, absent from play since having shoulder surgery in the start of May, has come back to Leinster training, though his fitness is uncertain whether he will be fit to face New Zealand in the US on 1 November.

Lock McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot issue suffered during the opening British and Irish Lions Test against the Wallabies in the summer.

Northern province player Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province winger Calvin Nash are not included because of injury, and number 15 Keenan was previously excluded after undergoing hip surgery after the summer tour.

Dublin province prop McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole new member in the 34-man squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union states new Munster pair Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped western province wing Shayne Bolton will travel to the US as "cover".

Following playing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a repeat of their previous meeting, the team host Japan, the Wallabies and world title holders the Springboks in the Irish capital.

In a largely familiar-looking squad, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will once again compete for the starting fly-half spot. The fly-half role is remains up for grabs, with Prendergast and Crowley set to play against each other for the first time in Saturday's URC match at the Dublin venue.

Frawley is the additional fly-half chosen with Farrell opting against selecting the province's Byrne.

At scrum-half, Farrell has selected British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who led the national side to the summer Test wins over the Lelos and Portugal. Additionally, there is a return for the western province's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to club-mate Ben Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey represent an veteran group of midfield options. Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, but the youngster is additionally a frontrunner to cover for the full-back at full-back.

Outside backs James Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. O'Brien impressed on his first Ireland outings over the summer with a brace each in the wins over the Lelos and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the only new name in the Irish forwards. The loose-head prop has started two of his province's URC United Rugby Championship games so far and played in Ireland A's loss by England in Bristol earlier this year.

Southern province lock Ahern, who received his first two caps in those Tests, is retained, and experienced Northern province lock Henderson is back after missing the summer matches.

Conan, who played in all three Lions matches during the tour, is set to deputise for the captain if the skipper does not regain fitness in time to play the All Blacks.

The Ireland squad will assemble in the capital on Monday before traveling to Chicago on the following day.
