Learning centers in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for weapon-wielding factions

Weapon-carrying attackers have fatally shot an educator and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an attack on a female high school in Nigeria's northwestern region, police reports indicate.

The armed faction stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the beginning of the work week, officials stated.

The assailants "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a gun duel" before scaling the perimeter fence and seizing the students from their living quarters, an official report indicated.

A school employee was killed while trying to protect the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now receiving treatment.

Eyewitnesses described a sizeable number of assailants, referred to locally as criminal elements, who arrived firing sporadically to generate terror.

Community members told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.

The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "additional police tactical units, alongside military personnel and community security teams" to the area.

A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and potential getaway paths.

In the past few years, schools in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for militant organizations, who frequently execute kidnappings to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.

The attack in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency afflicting the area, resulting in households in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they expect and desire their young ones' unharmed reappearance.

Security crisis in the northern regions of Nigeria has intensified significantly in the past few months, with educational institutions experiencing the greatest impact of the unrest.
