To his neighbors, Jihad al-Shamie gave the impression of having a largely unremarkable daily routine: a man with a newborn who engaged in weight training and parked his car inconsiderately near the home he lived with his mother and father.
As the child of a medical specialist, Shamie appeared to enjoy a happy childhood, with two younger brothers who went on to have notable jobs in computing and pharmaceutical sciences.
However, after his death after carrying out a violent act against a synagogue, a broader perspective has come to light. It has been learned that Shamie was already a bankrupt, previously sentenced for petty crimes and an alleged rapist when he attacked worshippers observing the holy day.
Jihad al-Shamie reportedly enjoyed a normal childhood in Manchester throughout that decade. Via personal footage recorded to send to his elder relative overseas, he cuddles a cat in the family garden, telling his father he wishes to give it food; in another he helps his sibling on a outdoor recreational item.
Shamie was raised alongside two younger brothers, the family enjoying days out to entertainment venue, Chester zoo and the shopping complex, and the boys took part in holiday theatrical productions at Christmas.
In their previous residence, across from the medical facility where Shamie’s father previously worked, those living nearby mentioned a “normal little boy” who was member of a “respectable home”.
He would engage harmoniously with youngsters on the street, and the sole peculiar aspect one recalled was that he spent most of the day engaging with electronic entertainment – so much that it made his eyes blink.
“They appeared normal, the father worked over the road, he seemed quite nice, regularly conversed with me. They seemed like decent people, the mom often talked with neighbors. The boy would play games, he would spend entire days playing, his eyes would frequently blink.”
Neighbors on Shamie’s quiet suburban street in Prestwich characterized him as a “uncomplicated, average person” who would often exercise in his outdoor space, practicing strength training, with a neighbor mentioning he regularly parked his car “badly” in front of her home.
The household reportedly relocated to the semi-detached house, about two miles from the scene of the attack, approximately fifteen years back, when Shamie was about to turn 20. As the boys matured, the household resided in the adjacent area.
His dad, Faraj al-Shamie, travelled the world as a trauma surgeon, operating in war-torn areas internationally, covering nations like Iraq, Afghanistan and South Sudan. He previously worked for NGOs, like the global Red Cross committee, and trained with the eminent surgeon David Nott in the urban center of Mosul in Iraq.
Faraj al-Shamie has separated the relatives from his son’s attack, sharing a statement on Facebook that read: “The news from Manchester concerning the violent incident aimed at a Jewish place of worship has been a profound shock to us.
“The household members both domestically and internationally explicitly rejects this horrific action, which targeted peaceful, innocent civilians. We entirely dissociate our family from this attack and express our deep shock and sorrow regarding these events. Our hearts and thoughts are with the victims and their families, and we wish them fortitude and solace.”
Shamie had formerly been employed as an instructor, instructing in language and coding. Yet, records showed him jobless in state bankruptcy files which indicated he applied for debt management during September of the prior year while living at the family home. Merely four weeks afterward, his dad uploaded an image of him with a newborn, labeling the image “Wonderful New Grandchild”.
It was revealed that Shamie was under investigation for sexual assault when he drove his small black Hyundai into worshippers at Heaton Park shul. The timing remains unclear the reported incident took place but it is believed to have occurred recently. He was being thoroughly examined by local law enforcement.
He had been in trouble before, according to sources, who said he had a criminal record for additional minor violations. He was not, however, on the radar by security services or protection organizations prior to the attack.
After the assault occurred, investigators have been pulling apart all aspects of his background to determine which influences directed him on the road to extremism. That includes examining phone records, researching personal connections, and examining his internet history.
He seemed to have been obsessed on the challenges affecting Muslim populations in areas within the Arab world, especially lately regarding Gaza. A social media profile, thought to be his has a machinegun as its profile picture, accompanied by floral imagery, and what appears to be a copy of the Qur’an.
