Lando Norris Leads Oscar Piastri in Sao Paulo Practice
Lando Norris has outscored Oscar Piastri at each of the previous five race weekends.
The McLaren driver just pipped fellow driver and title rival Oscar Piastri for the quickest lap in the dying seconds of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
Norris, who seized the title advantage from Piastri by just one point after winning in the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks ago, topped the Melbourne-born driver by 0.023 seconds.
Until that point, Oscar Piastri had been the leading McLaren throughout the hour before the sprint shootout due at the evening session.
Max Verstappen, the only other driver in the championship fight, trailing with a 36-point deficit Norris, finished in P17 as his team ran a different programme.
Verstappen's team-mate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to have an incident, if briefly, when he rotated at the fourth corner soon after starting.
The Japanese spun out over the curbs on exit before spinning across the run-off area, and was blessed to escape with just a light touch of the wall.
The Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton also spun, at the conclusion of the session, rotating twice through the high-speed Mergulho turn leading to the final bend on to the start-finish straight.
Hamilton ended the session in 19th, trailing team-mate Charles Leclerc.
The McLaren drivers were well clear of the other competitors, with Nico Hulkenberg's car P3, 0.619secs slower than Piastri's best.
Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was fourth fastest, with Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto ahead of Mercedes' Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
