On the eve of his six-year milestone at the helm, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his future at Arsenal is fundamentally dependent to achieving success.

The Journey So Far: The Arteta Era

The former Arsenal captain was appointed on 20 December 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup triumph not long after. Yet, that early success is still his only major honor following the departure of Unai Emery.

“Yes,” he stated when questioned about remaining in charge after his current deal. “But it’s about today. And numerous factors have to happen in the near future as well to earn the right.”

This weekend sees the six-year milestone with a fixture against Everton, the identical team Arsenal met the day after his role was made public.

The Current Landscape

With second-placed Manchester City taking on West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal could be displaced the summit in the Premier League before their own match begins. This potential shift despite Arteta overseeing a squad that has endured in excess of one hundred injury setbacks over the course of last season.

Arteta is under a contract with a year and a half left on the extension he agreed to in 2024, but is acutely aware that he must deliver in the immediate future.

During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, desire to learn and give their all to the team.”

The squad faces the upcoming game dealing with an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a muscle problem that is expected to sideline him for a few weeks.

Confidence in the Path

Even with the availability issues and the intense pressure, Arteta believes the club's “objectives and communication” are profoundly distinct from when he first arrived.

He pointed to the team's performances as evidence of progress. “You look at the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the standard we operate at.”

Arteta concluded, “This is a standard that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And our ambition is to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
