No Fewer Than 6 Perish in Crowd Crush at Ghanaian Military Recruitment Event
No fewer than 6 individuals have died amid a crowd crush at a armed forces enlistment event held in a sports arena in the West African nation.
The Wednesday's "tragic" event appeared to have been caused by "an unexpected surge of applicants who overcame security measures and stormed the entrances," announced a release from the nation's military.
22 others were injured, including five who are in critical condition.
A large crowd had gathered at El-Wak stadium, in the main city, the capital, with the aspiration of enlisting in the armed forces.
The country has a youth unemployment rate of about thirty-two percent, the most recent government statistics show, and such recruitment events normally draw massive gatherings and often lead to chaotic scenes.
The closing date to apply for this recruitment was extended by a week to accommodate additional candidates, as some had faced difficulties in the process.
Military representative Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin said the stampede took place ahead of the event's scheduled start of 6:20 AM Greenwich Mean Time.
Ghana's President John Mahama has visited the wounded in hospital.
Calm has been restored, and the enlistment process has since started.
