Teacher Killed and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Armed Clash at Nigerian School
Armed assailants have taken the life of an instructor and abducted at least 25 students in an raid targeting a girls' secondary school in north-western Nigeria, police reports indicate.
The armed faction invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the start of the week, police confirmed.
The assailants "confronted officers on duty in a firefight" before climbing over the boundary wall and abducting the learners from their dormitory, authorities disclosed.
One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now receiving treatment.
Observers recounted a large group of attackers, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who arrived firing sporadically to create fear.
Local residents informed journalists that the armed men then led a contingent of young women into nearby bushland.
The authorities announced they had sent "extra specialized police forces, in coordination with armed forces and local protection units" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and potential getaway paths.
In recent years, learning centers in northern Nigerian regions have increasingly been targeted for weapon-carrying factions, who often carry out abductions to demand financial compensation or gain negotiating power with authorities.
