Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

As any major honors show approaches, there’s always a clamor for introducing of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
