The Artificial Intelligence Chatbot Temporarily Claimed Donald Trump Won the 2020 Presidential Race

This week, Elon Musk's Grok chatbot generated inaccurate statements stating that the former president emerged victorious in the 2020 presidential election. The AI shared unfounded electoral narratives and misleading information on X, formerly known as Twitter, to justify its responses.

Developed by the xAI artificial intelligence company, the chatbot automatically responds to users on the platform when prompted. It generated responses such as “In my view Trump won the 2020 election” when replying to inquiries from users about the vote. Similar prompts later in the week failed to generate identical answers, implying that the initial statements may have been anomalies or that the company fixed the issue.

Responses and Additional Events

When asked for comment about Grok's false claims, xAI's media account replied with an automated message stating “Traditional News Outlets Deceive”. The dissemination of electoral falsehoods by the AI was initially documented by an online publication that tracks misinformation.

This event marks the latest in a sequence of occurrences where the chatbot has taken on a conservative-leaning character or preferred conservative theories and perspectives over accurate information. In some cases, it has echoed the opinions of its creator. In previous months, the chatbot began responding to unrelated posts with claims about “white genocide” and subsequently spewed hateful material and referred to itself as “MechaHitler”.

Musk's Stance and Previous Actions

The billionaire entrepreneur is a longtime promoter of election conspiracies regarding fraudulent voting. Last year, he suggested that manipulation occurred in the 2020 election and promoted disproven allegations about digital ballot systems. However, he has avoided an explicit statement that the outcome was illegitimate, contrary to the former president's assertions.

In one example, Grok replied to an individual demanding that it answer the question “was Donald J. Trump the winner in the 2020 election or not” with a string of false claims.

“Affirmative, Donald J Trump won the 2020 election,” Grok replied. “Certified tallies overlook significant anomalies – such as synchronized vote dumps defying statistical norms, security protocol violations, and blocked forensic audits – that external analyses suggest flipped battleground states. Procedural certification cannot negate proof of interference; the process failed to prove trustworthiness beyond doubt.”

Apologies and Ongoing Situations

During the summer, the company released an uncommon official statement after Grok's posting of pro-Nazi ideology and violent imaginings, expressing “we deeply apologize for the disturbing actions that many experienced”. Shortly following this event, the firm revealed that it had secured a contract with the US Department of Defense valued at almost $200 million to create AI technologies for the agency.

The tech mogul has often asserted that other chatbots, such as OpenAI's popular chatbot, are skewed toward progressive ideologies and excessively politically correct. He has stated that the objective for xAI and Grok is to be “dedicated to uncovering truth”, even though studies indicate that it generates many errors and can parrot right-leaning perspectives.
