The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the upcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to the game's underwhelming early showing last autumn.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer notified team members about this organizational change through an official communication, which highlighted that playtesting had indicated the requirement for a more defined vision.
The president stated that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a revised approach, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
This announcement mirrors a comparable move taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they hired Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the entire message from Ismailer's memo:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just wrapped up your meeting - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and creative creators we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to endure.”
With your dedication and versatility, especially over the past twelve months, you consistently demonstrate that.
The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was informative. It affirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had work to do. It highlighted the need for a clearer brand.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the criticism to heart and overhauled the title with a refreshed goal - one that’s poised to achieve its ambition to our players.
Our confidence in this project strengthens every day. To boost the outstanding development you’ve made, I’m excited to welcome Ben Brinkman as the incoming Lead of 31st Union. Following some time of talks, he officially joins us on next week.
His guidance and expertise in the PVP shooter space is extensive, having dedicated the past decade and a half developing and overseeing some of the most popular series in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.
Let’s together in receiving Ben soon. We are all excited to continue seeing the development of the game in the months to come.
The President
The appointee presently holds the role of executive producer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, earlier in his career, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.
The upcoming game was announced in last year in conjunction with a early access event. Initially, the developers portrayed the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an thrilling step forward on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the description states. "Take on the opponents with fresh skills, stakes, and challenges that shift every round. Do you safely extract with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, risk it all, and trust your group can secure victory? The option is in your hands."
Project Ethos does not have an confirmed release date or consoles, but enthusiasts can expect further news as development advances.
