As stated by American defense chief Pete Hegseth, American forces killed four individuals during a mission against a vessel allegedly transporting narcotics offshore close to Venezuela.
The strike took place shortly after American authorities notified lawmakers that the country had entered an armed confrontation against narco-trafficking organizations.
This marks no fewer than the fourth extraordinary and controversial attack by US forces beyond American waters in recent weeks.
The defense secretary stated that the boat was struck as it was carrying substantial amounts of illegal drugs bound for America, which he described as poisoning the people.
“Our intelligence, without a doubt, confirmed that this vessel was trafficking narcotics, the people onboard were narco-terrorists, and they were operating on a known narco-trafficking transit route,” Hegseth said in a social media post.
The defense secretary further asserted that the boat had links to Designated Terrorist Organizations, a label introduced in a confidential memo sent to lawmakers.
The Trump administration has informed Congress regarding its view that cartels are non-state armed actors and their actions in narcotics trafficking “constitute an armed attack” on the US.
This notification was accompanied by a secret session with lawmakers of the Senate armed services committee, conducted earlier this week.
Administration officials attempted to justify the strikes by citing the president’s Article II powers, which allow the use of military force in self-defense in limited engagements.
Prior to this strike, American military had conducted attacks on three boats in the Caribbean, which led to 17 fatalities and causing widespread international outrage.
Hegseth emphasized that these strikes “are ongoing” as long as “the attacks on the American people are over”.
Officials have reportedly strengthened a White House security body to operate separately within the administration, a shift from previous administrations where it reported to the security chief.
This restructuring affected the planning and execution of these military actions, as certain authorities learning of strikes shortly prior to they occur.
Despite official assertions, legal experts have noted that designating trafficking groups as foreign terrorist organizations does not grant extra powers to employ deadly action without solid proof linking them to a foreign government.
So far, the administration has yet to offer proof concerning the supposed infiltration of the Venezuelan government.
