Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the ability to question particular rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
